Greenock Morton 2 Forfar Athletic 0

Sunday, 09 November 2014 10:01

Forfar headed to Greenock looking to bounce back from their early Scottish Cup exit the previous weekend.  However, they returned home empty handed from a rain-swept Cappielow after a goal in each half from the hosts took all three points.

New loan signing Scott Smith started for the Loons with Templeman returning to the starting line-up.  The early exchanges were even with Forfar’s Hilson looking lively up front but the home side took the lead on fifteen minutes when debutant Scullion wrong footed Douglas with a low shot fired into the net through a forest of legs from the edge of the box.  In reply Hilson got himself into a good position to run at the home defence from the left, but after beating two defenders he ran out of pitch and the chance was gone.  The Forfar striker had another effort on goal which bore no fruit before Swankie saw his low effort saved at the post by Gaston.  Half time came with nothing to choose between the two sides apart from the narrow lead held by the Ton.

HALF TIME: Greenock Morton 1 Forfar Athletic 0

Forfar came out with their tails up at the start of the second half and immediately took the initiative going forward.  Swankie set up Malin on the run from the left but his effort from a tight angle hit the side netting.  Dods then went close with a header at the back post as Forfar pushed for an equaliser.  On the hour mark Forfar made a double change with Denholm and Kader coming on for Templeman and Malin with the Loons on top of the game.  Unfortunately they were undone a minute later after Barrowman swept a cut back into the net from a low left wing cross against the run of play.  Forfar kept at their game and were quite successful in pressing Morton back as they fought to get back into the game.  Swankie collected a fine cross-field diagonal pass from Husband and after taking the ball in his stride he advanced into the box from the left but saw his low far post effort brilliantly saved by Gaston.  Kader then tried his luck from the right, but once again Gaston was a match for the Loons attack.  Denholm the saw a vicious left foot effort from the edge of the box blocked by a packed home defence before loan signing Smith was crowded out as he attempted to make room for a shot from the eighteen yard line. Despite their endeavour the Loons couldn’t get the ball to run for them in the final third due mainly to some stubborn defending by an ever improving Morton side, and to compound things further for Dick Campbell’s side Paterson was shown a straight red card three minutes from time for a challenge on substitute Allan which may have been strong, but certainly wasn’t malicious.

At the final whistle the Loons were still sitting at the top of the table despite two draws and one defeat in their last three league games, with next weekend’s away derby fixture against Brechin a great opportunity for them to get back on the winning trail.
