Forfar Athletic 1 Stirling Albion 3

Sunday, 23 July 2017 07:57

Forfar Athletic crashed to a 3-1 defeat to League Two side Stirling Albion that almost certainly sends them out of the League Cup at the group stage.

The defeat sees the Loons on one point after two games, meaning they must defeat Falkirk and Inverness in their last two games in order to have any chance of progressing to the next round.

A Callumn Morrison double along with Ross Kavanagh’s goal had Stirling cruising with Mark Millar’s corner looking like it had taken a deflection on the way in for a last minute consolation.

Three changes were made from the penalty shoot out defeat at Brechin in midweek with Andy Munro, Ousman See and David Cox all replacing Michael Travis, Jim Lister and Marc Scott.

The visitors took an early lead just six minutes in when a counter attack ended in Callumn Morrison firing past McCallum for his first of the afternoon.
Three minutes later Forfar could have been level as Andy Munro saw a volley blocked before Dylan Easton shot inches over the bar.
Darren Smith couldn’t find the target with a couple of chances midway through the half and it was Stirling who found the net again just before half time.
Morrison showed his potential again with a smart finish for his and Stirling’s second.

The youngster almost grabbed his hat-trick six minutes into the second half when he collected an Andrew Black ball but his effort hit the post.
After Jim Lister and Marc Scott were introduced, Forfar seemed to get involved more after the hour mark; the latter setting up Lister and his shot was parried before Cox lashed wide of the mark.
Scott made a fantastic run from his own half in the 63rd minute to lay the ball off for Easton and despite nutmegging a defender in the box his final effort was tame and straight at the keeper.
Easton fired over from 20 yards however at the other end Stirling made their efforts count again as they added to their lead. A ball into the box wasn’t cleared and after it fell to Ross Kavanagh he gleefully netted to make it 3-0.
Easton and Eddie Malone came close for the Loons as they looked to redeem some pride and did deep into injury time as Mark Millar’s corner ended up in the back of the net. The corner may have been diverted in by Liam Caddis however the goal was awarded to the Loons midfielder.

Forfar now face a difficult away game at Falkirk on Tuesday before hosting Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday.
