Forfar Athletic 0 Airdrieonians 1

Sunday, 04 February 2018 11:10

Forfar Athletic’s winning run came to an end on Saturday as a solitary goal saw Airdrieonians take all three points.

Dale Carrick’s 40th minute winner pushes the Diamonds further away from the Loons, with Forfar staying in ninth.

Jim Weir made one change to the side that won at East Fife the previous week; new loanee Greg Hurst replacing Josh Peters.

The Loons defence was called into action in the fourth minute when Dale Carrick forced Marc McCallum into a great save before Kevin McNaughton cleared a David Brownlie header off the line from the resulting corner.

At the other end Ross MacIver nodded over after Dylan Easton’s cross was flicked on by Greg Hurst in the 17th minute.

Two minutes later Hurst dragged his shot wide before Tom Fry was denied by McCallum.

Fry almost went one better just before the half hour mark; his shot cannoning off the crossbar with the rebound being cleared.

Aitken couldn’t find a way past Rohan Ferguson twice in quick succession but it was the visitors who took the lead in the 40th minute.

A free kick from distance was knocked down by Darryl Duffy and Carrick was on hand to divert the ball past McCallum.

McCallum denied Duffy again before the break as the Diamonds went in with the slim advantage.

Forfar started off well in the second half; sub Eddie Malone and Greg Hurst unlucky not to find the target.

In the 65th minute Aitken dragged his effort wide of the mark while Fry failed to beat McCallum two minutes later.

Both sides struggled to break down their respective defences as the game entered the final stages, Russell Dingwall saw his volley held by Ferguson before Munro had chances twice in the final five minutes.

The final effort of the game fell to Airdrie sub Luke Watt, however he couldn’t beat the Loons man of the match McCallum.
