Forfar Athletic 2 East Fife 0

Wednesday, 27 July 2016 08:33

The game started at a lively pace with both teams going on the offensive from the off. Forfar were using the width of the pitch to produce some slick interplay resulting in several corners and sustained pressure on Ryan Goodfellow’s goal and this pressure paid off after 21 minutes when the ball broke to Josh Peters his 25 yard effort was blocked but the ball deflected to Jim Lister on the right hand edge of the 18 yard line and he cooly lobbed the keeper.

The game ebbed and flowed with Paul McManus testing Grant Adam and Thomas O‘Brien pulling out several, of what is becoming his trade mark, 25 yard efforts but the East Fife defence stood firm to his efforts. Jim Lister thought he had doubled the lead and his tally for the night, a free kick delivered hard and fast into the penalty area by Gavin Swankie, met by Jim Lister’s looping header which beat Ryan Goodfellow but good defensive cover from Gary Naysmith seen him able to hook the ball before it crossed the goal line.

East Fife’s best chance of the first half fell to Kevin O’Hara when he was put clean through and tried to emulate Jim Lister and lob Grant Adam but stuck it all wrong  and the ball went harmlessly past Grant Adams right hand post.

HALF-TIME Forfar Athletic 1 East Fife 0

Second half started at the same high intense pace and a speculative cross come shot from Jamie Bain somehow sneaked through the East Fife defence and Ryan Goodfellow had to pull of a good save low left hand post seeing the ball late. The pressure paid off for Forfar moments later, as the ball broke to Andy Munro around the centre spot and he drilled a low right footed shot through the defence and past the goalkeeper.

Forfar almost gifted East Fife a way back into this match with an uncharacteristic mix up at the back between Grant Adam and Stuart Malcolm seeing the ball break free to Kevin Smith who was clear on goal but he blasted the ball high over the bar much to the relief of the Forfar defence. Grant Adam was called into action again to deal with a left footed shot from Mark Lamont.

Thomas O’Brien looked destined to be on the score sheet with another fearce shot only to see it come squarely off the post and deflect away to safety. Danny Denholm picked up the ball in his own half and made a positive run at the East Fife defence laying the ball off to David Cox who slid in Josh Peters for him to shoot powerfully across goal only to be pushed behind for a corner. Forfar couldhave made it three with a clearance from Grant Adam flicked on by Jim Lister to release Lewis Milne clean throught with only the keeper to beat but his shot was well saved.

FULL-TIME Forfar Athletic 2 East Fife 0

Overall a comfortable victory for Forfar who were much more threatening than East Fife over the ninety minutes. This now sets up a final group showdown at Dens Park on Saturday to see who will qualify to progress in the BedFred League Cup this season
