Forfar Athletic 4 Cowdenbeath 3

Sunday, 14 August 2016 12:34

Both relegated teams squared up at Station Park and produced a cracking game. Cowdenbeath’s Dean Brett had the first chance from a free kick 20yards out, his shot just flying wide past Grant Adam’s left hand post. The deadlock was almost broken when Jim Lister rattled the underside of the bar from a thundering shot after a neat turn in the box. It  didn’t take long for the scoring bonanza to start with Craig Sives firing an unstoppable volley after the ball broke kindly for him inside the penalty area. Forfar responded almost immediately with a nice move that beat the offside trap with a ball through from Josh Peters but keeper saved well from Jim Lister. Jim Lister did equalise from a Danny Denholm corner when he beat his man at the near post with a header that seemed to bounce over Cowdenbeath keeper David McGurn. Forfar were on the ascendancy now and imposed their pressure with a stunning free kick from Danny Denholm that gave no chance to David McGurn as it flew into his top right hand corner.

HALF-TIME Forfar Athletic 2 Cowdenbeath 1

The second half continued at the same pace with shots from Jim Lister and a header from Andy Munro testing David McGurn. Forfar increased their lead when Josh Peters picked up the ball 25-yards out and drove at the heart of the Cowdenbeath defence before placing an accurate shot low and left just inside David McGurn’s left hand post. Cowdenbeath responded well and had sustained pressure on Grant Adam’s goal.  Dean Brett went close hitting the post before Nickolay Todorov bulleted a header into the net. Dean Brett again was thwarted by the post after a powerful run on the Forfar goal. Forfar had a chance to seal the points with a clearance from Grant Adam, neatly flicked on from Jim Lister and Andy Munro took it in his stride but keeper saved well. Lewis Moore then squared the game up at 3-3 with a well-placed shot from 18yards. Into the dying embers of the game and Forfar kept pushing for a winner. The ball broke to Gavin Swankie around the 18-yard line and he hit a sweet volley clean into the Cowdenbeath net to secure the full three points. David McGurn pulled off a double save from Jim Lister in the final minutes as Forfar pushed to increase their lead, but the home side settled for the victory in what was a highly entertaining 90 minutes.
