Penalty Shoot-Out Heartbreak for young ‘Loons’

Friday, 04 November 2016 09:54

Forfar Athletic’s Under 20 side put up a heroic performance in their Scottish Youth Cup tie against St. Johnstone at Station Park on Thursday night before eventually losing out 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after 120 minutes of intense action.

Neither side managed to find the net over those two hours, but it was not for the lack of trying with Jason King in the home goal and the visitors Ben MacKenzie both bringing of a string of fine saves.

What made the home performance all the more commendable against a full time outfit was the fact that they went into the game without three of their more influential performers for differing reasons in Frankie Devine, Murray MacKintosh and Angus Mailer.

Saints to be fair had the better of the first half, although Matty Aitken and Jamie Gill came close for the home side.

However the Athies without doubt had the upper hand in the second period, failing to convert two or three goal scoring opportunities, before they had to rely on a goal line clearance from Greg Warwick in injury time to take the game into an extra thirty minutes of action.

Both teams tired visibly in the extra time period with some of the home heroes on the night quite frankly out on their feet by the final whistle.

Sadly for the home players and reasonable support it was the Saints who triumphed in the shoot-out which stretched to eventually six attempts apiece before a winner was found.

All credit to the home side for their efforts on the night.

Their display was a credit to their coaching staff and to their fitness level.

Another pleasing aspect of the evening came at the 10.05p.m. conclusion to events when former Scotland defender and Saints Assistant Manager Callum Davidson who had watched the game from the stand made a point of personally congratulating each of the home squad on their performance as they came up the tunnel.
