Cowdenbeath 2 , Forfar Athletic 0
Forfar travelled to Central Park looking to put the dampers on Cowdenbeath’s potential title party with both sides keeping one ear on the outcome at Cliftonhill which could affect both of them in different ways.
In a reasonably even first half Low fired wide from twenty yards for Forfar before Paterson saved well from home wide man McKenzie. Templeman then shot wide of the home goal and Cowdenbeath replied with a Linton free kick which Paterson dealt with comfortably. Forfar should have taken the lead midway through the first half but Campbell saw his effort cleared off the line by Linton. McKenzie fired wide again for Cowdenbeath as the half ended goal-less.
The second half continued in the same vein with Forfar pushing the champions elect all the way. The deadline was broken eighteen minutes from time when McKenzie eventually found his way to goal by running on to a Stewart flick before knocking the ball past Paterson. It could be argued that there was a bit of good fortune at play in the lead up to the goal as McKenzie appeared to be offside when the ball was played through to him. At that point there was only going to be one winner and although Forfar still squandered chances courtesy of Low and Hilson the game was decided by a second goal from McKenzie as he raced through the Forfar defence to get his and Cowdenbeath’s second.
At the final whistle the Blue Brazil were worthy title winners for their consistency throughout the season, although Forfar ran them close on the day and were perhaps unfortunate to leave Fife with nothing to show for their efforts. The season will now go right to last game for the Loons as they battle to avoid relegation. The joyous Central Park fans united as a family to invade the pitch at time up to congratulate their heroes and savour the moment they quite rightfully deserved.
