Forfar Athletic 0 Airdrieonians 2

Sunday, 17 April 2016 06:18

Forfar Athletic went into todays game on the back of good performances and results picked up in the previous week, but were certainly not able to continue that today with no shots on goals for the full 90 minutes.

Early in the first half, a long ball from Darren Hill into the penalty box fell for Steven Craig but he volleyed his shot over the bar. Airdrieonians took the lead in the 10th minute from a corner floated to the back post which was headed back across goal by Nicky Cadden. Steven Craig got his head to it but didn’t clear the danger and Alan Lithgow got up and headed the ball wide of Darren Hill's left hand. The visitors got a lift from the goal and continued to press without cutting out any good clear chances. Good build up play on the left side saw Danny Denholm slide a ball into the danger area but Gavin Swankie couldn’t quite get on the end of it. Forfar’s best chance of the half came from a driving run to the byline on the left by Gavin Swankie who cross and Steven Craig glanced a header just over the bar. Airdrie doubled there lead just before half time thanks to a lovely lobbed finish over Darren Hill by Jim Lister after recieving a ball over the Forfar defence from 30 yards out.

Half-Time Forfar Athletic 0 Airdrieonians 2

Forfar created a chance with some good build up play down the left, the ball going across the 6 yard line which Kerr Hay almost got on the end of, eventually the ball breaking to the edge of the box where Gavin Swankie fired wide and high. The strong wind caused a problem for Darren Hill from a free kick which was fired back goalwards and Jim Lister powered into the penalty area. Hill looked stranded but the striker did not get a great connection and saw the ball go wide of the empty net. Airdireonians continued to boss the game and called Darren Hill into action several times, Forfar’s Bryan Hodge managed to keep the ball in on the left, passing to Scott Smith to slide the ball sideways for Martyn Fotheringham to shoot but sliced it wide of Neil Parry’s left hand post. Omar Kader battled well to keep the ball and produced a right footed cross onto the penalty spot where Matthew Aitken got his head onto it but couldn’t keep it down and the ball floated over the crossbar. Some nice footwork from Martyn Fotheringham create space for a dangerous left footed cross which Omar Kader was not quite able to get on the end of. A corner whipped in from Omar Kader was right on top of Neil Parry on the goal line and several players claiming the ball had crossed the line but no goal was given.
