Forfar Athletic 1 Dundee United 1

Wednesday, 06 July 2016 10:33

A ‘Loons’ team minus two key players in Gavin Swankie and Danny Denholm through work and holiday commitments as well as the injured Michael Kennedy  gave another excellent pre-season account of themselves on Tuesday evening holding a Dundee United side to a 1-1 draw at Station Park.

United fielded a side that was a mixture of youth and experience with plenty of the latter on their bench in particular.

A superb crowd of 1,623 in the evening sunshine were treated to an entertaining ninety minutes, the visitors over the piece deservedly drawing level, albeit in the dying minutes of the contest.

The visitors had threatened to take an early lead, but it was in fact the home side who scored first in the 17th minute.    Eighteen year old striker Matthew Aitken was bundled over in the box by Jamie Robson and David Cox sent the subsequent spot kick into the bottom corner of Zwick’s net.
Both sides had chances in the remainder of the half with Justin Johnson a particular ‘thorn in the flesh’ of a nevertheless resolute home defence.
The Tannadice outfit came out with all ‘guns blazing’ in the second period and proceeded to introduce Simon Murray, Blair Spittal and Scott Fraser to the fray.
Their pressure eventually paid off with four minutes remaining when Johnson ran on to a Fraser pass and rifled the ball past Grant Adam from 15 yards out.
At the end of the ninety minutes Gary Bollan must have been delighted by the display and especially the work ethic of his side, epitomised by many a tried leg by the conclusion.

The display of some of the younger players in the squad also bodes well for not only the future but in terms of competition for places as the season progresses.

Highland League Inverurie Loco Works now provide the opposition in the ‘Loons’ next pre-season outing at Station Park on Saturday first with a 3p.m. kick-off.
