Forfar Athletic 3 Cove Rangers 3

Wednesday, 13 July 2016 13:26

The ‘Loons’ final pre-season fixture turned out to be the proverbial game of two halves at Station Park on Tuesday night.

The home side totally dominated the first half and were well worth their two goal advantage at the break. However in the second period, Cove were much the better side and only a late penalty strike earned the homesters a share of the spoils.

Visiting keeper Stuart McKenzie made the first of a handful of excellent first half saves as early as the ninth minute tipping an Andy Munro header from a ‘Foxy’ corner on to the bar.
However he could do nothing to stop Kerr Hay’s 15 yard rocket which crashed into the net of the underside of the bar on the quarter of an hour mark, the young striker having been put clear by trialist Jordan Moore.
Two minutes later and the Athies were two up, visiting defender Lewis Dunbar diverting a Matthew Aitken cross past his own keeper.
The Highland League champions looked a different side in the second 45 and reduced the leeway on the 59 minute mark. Slack defensive work allowed Mitch Megginson to poke the ball home from close range.
There was nothing ‘slack’ however about the visitors next two counters, the first a cracking free kick from John Smith, the second a raking drive in the 74th minute from sub Paul Esslemont with what was his first kick of the ball.
Angus Mailer came closest to netting a third for the home side, before the equaliser did arrive to maintain the ‘Loons’ unbeaten pre-season record with four minute left on the clock.
Jamie Bain was brought down inches inside the box and David Cox made no mistake with the resultant penalty.

Another nevertheless great work out for Gary Bollan’s side prior to the visit of Dumbarton in the Betfred Cup on Saturday first.

For that game the Manager will no doubt be hoping to welcome back Stuart Malcolm, Gavin Swankie, Tam O’Brien and Jim Lister, all absentees last night to the starting eleven.
