Aberdeen U20 1 Forfar Athletic 3

Wednesday, 17 August 2016 15:53

Forfar made a long midweek trip to North Lodge Park, home of Formartine United to play their Irn Bru cup second round match against Aberdeen U20s.  The long journey was not in vain as the Loons ran out deserved winners by three goals to one.

Two early headed chances for Forfar by Malcolm caused little trouble for Craddock in the Aberdeen goal as they both cleared the cross bar.  However, the game changed not long before the mid-point in the first half when Aberdeen central defender Roscoe was shown a straight red card for an unwise challenge on Forfar’s new short-term signing Smith.  With Aberdeen moving to three at the back Forfar looked to exploit the extra width available as Denholm fired a couple of inviting crosses in from the left which went unconverted.  On thirty two minutes Forfar took the lead when Peters expertly created space for himself in the box after receiving a ball from the right to place a right footed shot in to the bottom left corner of the net.  The Forfar defence had to be on continual alert as Aberdeen’s pace from centre to front was always a potential threat, however apart from a few half chances the Loons stood firm.

HALF-TIME Aberdeen U20 0 Forfar Athletic 1

Early in the second half Forfar increased their lead when Mackintosh played in Scott down the right who crossed for Smith to finish from inside the box.  Forfar then proceeded to create a few more good chances which they couldn’t convert.  Peters tried to set up Milne when he would have been better going for goal himself, Swankie floated one just over the bar and substitute Hay also fired one over the bar.  Adam had to look smart in the Forfar goal to thwart an Aberdeen effort before Bain lobbed a volley off the bar and Peters stung Craddock’s hands with a fierce shot from inside the box.  The Loons looked like they could be punished for their profligacy in front of goal when Omolokun looped a shot over Adam to get a goal back for the young Dons at the death, however in time added on Milne brilliantly anticipated a pass out from the Aberdeen defence to set up Peters for his second and Forfar’s third to send the Loons into the next round.
