Borderline Victory for Loons

Forfar returned from their first trip across the border since 2010 with a hard fought two goals to one victory against Berwick Rangers.

Forfar took the lead on ten minutes when Milne curled a delightful right foot shot into the far corner of the net from the left side of the box.  Berwick replied when Adam had to look alert to push a low Sheerin effort round his near post.  Sheerin then smacked a great right foot effort off Adam’s bar from outside the box before Peters screwed a left foot shot wide of the home goal.  Munro then cleared a low shot from inside the Forfar six yard box as the home pushed forward.  O’Brien then tried his luck from distance, but the Forfar midfielder’s shot was wide of the target.  An O’Brien flick on fell awkwardly for Lister in front of goal as Forfar nearly increased their lead and a good sliding interception from Mackintosh prevented a dangerous situation from developing in the Forfar box.  Fox then pulled his shot from a Peters cut back across the goal and as the first half came to a close Thomson saw a tame headed effort easily dealt with by Adam in the Forfar goal before good work from Lister on the right created a half chance for Peters which came to nothing.

HALF-TIME Berwick Rangers 0 Forfar Athletic 1

Berwick started the second half on the front foot with Notman bringing a decent save out of Adam.  Then it was Milne’s turn to do the tame header routine when the Forfar scorer headed wide from a good position in the home box.  The Loons went two nil up in the fifty-third minute when Hamilton’s headed clearance from a deep right wing cross rather fortuitously ricocheted off Peters and into the Berwick net.  Lister then went one on one with home keeper Kevin Walker, but the Forfar striker’s lob cleared the bar as yet another opportunity went unconverted.  Home striker Allan Walker then saw his effort from a right wing cut back go just wide of Adam’s near post, however the Wee Rangers eventually got themselves back into the game on sixty-two minutes when Sheerin fired home a loose ball in the Forfar box from an Allan Walker free kick.  With Berwick pushing hard for an equaliser there were a few uncomfortable moments in the Forfar box which fortunately came to nothing for the home side as the Loons defence stood firm.  Late on Lister broke free through the middle and despite being slightly impeded he got a shot away which was blocked by Kevin Walker in the Berwick goal.  Forfar’s Scott then saw a shot deflected wide of the target, and as the home side continued to look for an equaliser a rash challenge on Forfar’s Fox by McKenna saw the home player dismissed as all three points headed back to Scotland.
