Forfar Athletic 3 Raith Rovers 2

Sunday, 04 September 2016 09:03

Forfar progressed into the next round of the Irn Bru Challenge Cup with a confident and well deserved victory over Championship side Raith Rovers.

David Cox was put up front for Forfar and Marc Scott got his chance down the right side and both played very well, with Cox producing a bit of determination and skill at the edge of the box but only finding the side netting with his shot. Marc Scott was proving to be a handful and looking to beat his man at every opportunity and get good crosses into the penalty area. However it was Raith who took the lead, mainly due to a defensive slip from Jamie Bain, misjudging the bounce of the ball, which Rudi Skacel pounced on and fired the ball low and hard across the penalty area and Mark Stewart got to it before Grant Adam to fire it into the net. Forfar responded positively and Lewis Milne picked the ball up around the half way line and the space seemed to open up for him to drive at the Raith defence unchallenged for him to unleash an unstoppable right footed shot which flew into Connor Ripley’s right hand top corner. Forfar capitalised on their momentum and won a free kick around 25 yards out, Thomas O’Brien tried to slid the ball underneath the defensive wall and it deflected kindly for Josh Peters to slot the ball past Ripley low and right.

The second half, Forfar continued to be extremely positive and Gavin Swankie and Michael Kennedy were linking up well down the left flank, Marc Scott couldn’t quite connect with a deep cross at the back post from Michael Kennedy however Forfar did increase their lead with a volley from Josh Peters from good build up between Gavin Swankie and Marc Scott at the edge of the 18yard box. Raith did put sustained pressure on the Forfar goal to get back into the game, but Grant Adam was in good form, eventually they did get a goal back, from a corner kick Declan McManus got in front of the keeper to header in. Danny Denholm impressed when he came on, looking to beat his man and get to the byline at every opportunity and get the ball into the dangerous area. Raith almost snatched an equaliser at the death, a half volley from Ross Callachan had Grant Adam scrambling to his right and he could only parry the ball out into Lewis Vaughan’s path, but he blasted his shot well wide from 6 yards.

Forfar now look forward to the draw for the next round on Tuesday to see who they will face in the next round.
