Montrose 1 Forfar Athletic 1

Tuesday, 22 November 2016 13:52

In what was a thoroughly entertaining game at Links Park the points were shared which seemed a fair result to both sets of supporters.

Both teams looked to get on the front foot at every opportunity. Marc Scott made a penetrating run into the penalty area, slipping the ball to Martyn Fotheringham but he couldn’t get his shot on target. Montrose’s Graeme Webster hit a powerful shot which was certainly on target but unfortunately for him Gary Fraser couldn’t get out of the way and blocked his effort. Gavin Swankie was playing wide left and chipped a telling cross into the 6-yard area. Unfortunately for Forfar it was slightly too high for David Cox to get his head onto the ball. Montrose did open the scoring with a clever flicked ball into the box from Gregor Anderson and Gary Fraser very skilfully softly cushioned the ball on full stretch and dinked the volley over the onrushing Grant Adam. Indeed Montrose appeared to have doubled their lead minutes later from a corner kick which Michael Bolochoweckyj headed the ball into the net only for the stand side linesman to flag for an infringement which left everyone a little stunned as appeared he was the only one to pick up on the foul.  Forfar’s response was good and a lovely move involving David Cox, Gavin Swankie and Marc Scott saw the ball fired across the penalty area as Danny Denholm was motoring to try and get on the end of the cross he but couldn’t quite reach it. Danny Denholm was not to be outdone and this time he was right in the middle of the goal and from 2-yards out headed home from a David Cox cross to square the game.

The second half continued to be highly entertaining although both teams seemed to cancel each other out with clear chances few and far between. Gavin Swankie crossed a ball into the box but David Cox couldn’t quite get his body into the right shape to get his volley on target. Jonny Court hit a powerful ball across the Forfar penalty area but it was too strong for Andrew Steeves to catch up and get on the end of it. Martyn Fotheringham had a chance from 30-yards out and was looking for the top left hand corner of Allan Fleming’s goal but sent it a fraction too high over the crossbar. Forfar’s substitute Jim Lister came on and looked lively receiving the ball with his back to goal, made enough space and time to spin and get a shot on target which Allan Fleming had to save smartly/ The chance to win the game fell to Jim Lister in the last minute, a ball come in for the right and over the defenders head and looked like all he had to do was header the ball into the net but for some reason decided to chest the ball and the chance was lost as Allan Fleming smothered the ball.
