Impressive first run out for ‘Loons’

Gary Bollan’s side began their five match pre-season fixture list with a 2-0 win over Raith Rovers at Station Park last night.

One never reads too much into friendly match performances or for that matter the end result, but nevertheless there was undoubted encouragement  for the home support in a crowd of 336 in the overall display of the homesters.

Late call-offs including one of the scheduled trialists who decided earlier in the day that his future lay elsewhere meant Gary could only list fourteen players including four players from last season’s Development Squad.

To be fair visiting manager Gary Locke’s squad was similarly stretched.

However after having the better of a highly entertaining first half hour it was the Athies who took the lead on the 34 minute mark.   Debutant David Cox pounced on a knock down by trialist defender Andrew Munro to flick the ball past Kevin Cuthbert from close range.
Both keepers made saves of note in the second period, before the home side netted a cracking second goal with fifteen minutes remaining.
Danny Denholm burst clear on the left, slid the ball into the path of second half sub Kerr Hay who made no mistake with an angled drive from 15 yards out.
David Cox had to leave the field shortly after feeling unwell, but thankfully following assistance from the club medics, he made a speedy recovery.

At the end of the day a satisfactory ninety minutes for the ‘Loons’, Raith’s night blighted by a couple of injuries, hopefully not to serious with their first competitive game just over two weeks away at the same venue against Cove Rangers in the Betfred Cup.

Forfar’s squad will go through another training session at St. Andrews on Thursday night before returning to Station Park on Saturday morning for a workout ahead of the afternoon tussle with Highland League Brora Rangers when Gary will hopefully have a couple of last night’s absentees back in the ranks.

Forfar lined up;- Adam, Yates, Kennedy, Munro, O’Brien(Hay), Mackintosh, Bain, Swankie, Aitken, Cox(Devine), Denholm  Sub not used - Hill
