Forfar Athletic 1 Montrose 3

Sunday, 02 October 2016 18:15

Forfar Athletic were left to rue for not taking their chances early on in this game and paid the price as Montrose went on to comfortably see out the win and the early season bragging rights in Angus.

The first of Forfar’s chances fell to Allan Smith whose shot was smothered by Allan Fleming. The next move was a Swankie flick over the Montrose defence for Lewis Milne to run onto but he fired wide as the keeper closed him down. Forfar certainly didn’t have it all their own way and Gary Fraser slipped but still managed to get a shot away. The ball seemed to scoop up and Grant Adam had to be at full stretch to keep it out.  Kieran McWalter came even closer minutes later rattling the cross bar with a powerful right footed effort from 25 yards out. Chances continued to fall for Forfar as Gavin Swankie reached the touchline and stood up a delightful ball for Jim Lister whose powerful header beat Allan Fleming only to see it hit the base of the post. The Montrose defence managed to scrambled the ball away. Jim Lister made a good run down the right crossing the ball which Allan Smith cushioned back but Danny Denholm couldn’t get any purchase on the shot which was tamely saved. Probably the best chance of the first half fell to Thomas O’Brien, from a throw in by Lewis Milne, which Jim Lister flicked on. O’Brien managed to ghost up behind the defence and had a header into what appeared to be an empty net only to see it drift wide of the left hand post. Jamie Bain picked up the ball from the centre circle and drove at the Montrose defence, getting into the penalty area and unleashing a powerful left footed effort which was well saved. Montrose continued to press and a hard fast shot across the box where Michael Bolochoweckyj managed to latch onto but couldn’t keep his shot down when it seemed easier to score. Gary Fraser was having a good game and was played through and tried to lob Grant Adam for the 18yard line but just over hit the ball onto the roof of the net. However he did open the scoring minutes later with a good turn inside the penalty area and managed to get his shot off, which deflected of Stuart Malcolm to wrong foot Grant Adam and give Montrose the lead.

The second half saw another ex-Forfar player score against the Loons, when Iain Campbell delivered a free kick into the danger area. Grant Adam fumbled the kick and the ball broke to Chris Templeman to prod the ball home. Forfar continued to press the game but it looked like one of those days where nothing was coming off for the home side. Gavin Swankie had a shot which he didn’t quite connect with correctly, Jim Lister had a powerful header over the bar from a good Danny Denholm free kick and Jamie Bain tried to curl a shot into Allan Flemings right hand post from the 18yard line but again just off target. The game was finished as a contest when Stuart Malcolm was deemed to have brought down Kieran McWalter in the penalty area; Gary Fraser fired the penalty hard into the back of the net. Forfar did get a consolation goal via Danny Denholm in stoppage time, a glancing header from a Marc Scott cross.
