Things Look Well For Loons in Their First Outing

Thursday, 08 July 2010 22:00

Forfar Athletic 1 Motherwell 2

The Loons ran out to face their first opposition of the season wearing their brand new away kit, and I must say they looked mighty fine.

The opening 20 minutes was fairly quiet, Forfar's only real chance came when a long throw in by McCulloch fired across the Motherwell back line and both Templeman and Gibson failed to connect. The visitor's only real effort in that period came when Page headed past from a Humphrey corner. Humphrey's corners were to become a major part of the 'Well attacks all evening.
The visitors scored the first goal of the evening in the 23rd minute. Shuker collected the ball on the right hand side of the Loons penalty box, before avoiding a challenge and firing home from 15 yards out. Motherwell's lead lasted all of 2 minutes! Again a Mark McCulloch long throw in landed in the danger area, this time Templeman flicked it on, and Gibson nodded home the equaliser.
5 minutes later and the Loons produced the move of the match so far. Chris Templeman displayed his usual neat footwork and in the process beat two visiting midfielders before sending Sellars down the right wing - Barry looked up, crossed to the feet of Martyn Fotheringham who fired inches over from 18 yards out.
The remainder of the half was pretty even, with one more chance falling to each side. John Sutton fired low into the arms of Gallacher after 37 minutes then moments later Fotheringham did well to deliver a decent ball onto the head of Gibson, this time Graham's header was well off target.

The second half was only a couple of minutes old before Forfar created another chance. Mowatt received a long ball from Tulloch, lifted the ball over the Motherwell defence, and Templeman read the situation well running onto the ball before firing a low shot into the arms of Hollis from a tight angle.
It was now the visitors turn to go close - a dangerous corner from Humphrey was headed just past by Saunders. Soon after, Humphrey once again delivered a dangerous corner and this time it was Hutchinson who headed just over.
Just as Forfar came close to taking the lead after a Tulloch free kick was headed goal wards by Templeman, only to be well saved, it was Motherwell who grabbed the winner. Humphrey finally saw his efforts pay off when he delivered another dangerous corner into the heart of the Forfar defence, as Gallacher came to collect he failed in his efforts and the ball fell to Reynolds who fired home from close range with 12 minutes remaining
Forfar's final chance of the match came 4 minutes into injury time when Iain Campbell's low cross gave the Motherwell defence problems when they couldn't clear the ball properly and both Lunan and Templeman had failed attempts at grabbing the equaliser.
Forfar brought on Watson, Bishop and Smith during the second half, along with trialist Paul Lunan.

This was a good work out for the Loons who not only knocked the ball about confidently, but also looked reasonably tight at the back.

Next in town is Buckie Thistle who visit Station Park on Saturday.
