Forfar Athletic 1 Raith Rovers 1

Saturday, 28 October 2017 20:26

Forfar Athletic bounced back from the previous week’s heavy defeat to draw with the league leaders Raith Rovers on Saturday.  Match action can be viewed here.

After going behind to a John Herron goal, Mark Millar levelled from the penalty spot with Iain Davidson being sent off for the visitors.

Jim Weir handed starts to debutant Conner Duthie, on loan from Dunfermline Athletic and Murray Mackintosh who returned to the first team to make his first appearance since December 2016.

Forfar started off well with Duthie curling an effort past the post in the sixth minute after combining with Mackintosh.

At the other end Marc McCallum denied Liam Buchanan from close range before the Raith striker fired over when he should have done better.

In the 18th minute Lewis Vaughan saw his effort deflected wide and the resulting corner from the winger was sent over the bar by Jason Thomson.

John Herron was denied by the Loons defence shortly before Mackintosh lashed the ball past the post after being set up by David Cox.

Thomson had a shot from distance as the visitors looked to go into half time ahead but couldn’t find the target again.

The Loons were dealt a blow four minutes before the break as Marc Scott limped off to be replaced by Josh Peters.

Cox and Mackintosh combined again for the latter to fire wide at the start of the second half while at the other end Vaughan was inches away from scoring.

Jamie Bain sent his effort over the bar in the 51st minute and two minutes later Vaughan was involved for Raith again; forcing a good save from Marc McCallum.

The visitors eventually made a breakthrough just before the hour mark; Thomson’s cross to the back post was stabbed home by the unmarked Herron.

Forfar found themselves level twelve minutes later when a long ball from Michael Travis made its way towards the Raith box with neither Graeme Smith or Iain Davidson willing to take responsibility and deal with it. Sub Ousman See nipped past Davidson into the box but was hauled down by the experienced defender and he was shown a red card by referee Graham Beaton for his troubles.

It was a situation Raith could have resolved easily but Mark Millar wasn’t complaining as he stroked the ball past Smith from the spot for his seventh of the season.

Dylan Easton hit the post in the 77th minute as the Loons looked to capitalise on the advantage before the midfielder sent an effort over the bar.

Vaughan should have done better with his shot in the final ten minutes but it was the Loons who had the final chance of the game; Cox’s free kick was headed inches wide by sub Scott McBride.

The Loons now move two points behind closest rivals Queen’s Park with a trip to Albion Rovers on the cards next week.

McCallum, Bain, Kennedy, Whyte, Travis, Millar, Scott (Peters 41), Mackintosh, Cox, Easton (McBride 80), Duthie (See 62)

Subs not used: Cregg, Aitken, Quigley, Adam (gk)
