Ayr United 2 Forfar Athletic 3

Sunday, 31 December 2017 09:46

The ‘Loons’ pulled off a stunning victory over league leaders Ayr United at Somerset Park yesterday to end 2017 on a high note.

The victory owed much to a never say die attitude from the patched up ‘Loons’ side with only four subs available, but especially to a display of quite frankly world class goalkeeping from Marc McCallum.

The big stopper made at least six amazing saves when his side were under the cosh to thwart the home outfit and keep his own team in the contest.

It took the homesters until added time in the first half to break the deadlock with a close range Michael Moffat strike.

When Lawrence Shankland made it two in the 67th minute you feared the worst but a comeback of some proportion was ignited in the 75th minute.

Nineteen year old trialist defender Jordan Hornby released by Dundee United late on Friday afternoon curled a 22 yard free kick into the corner of the net  which seemed to alight panic in the home ranks.

Step up Matthew Aitken with two great strikes in the 83rd and 88th minute to send all in the visiting camp on the day wild with delight.

Thanks in closing to the seventeen Forfar fans who made the trip to the game and were so well rewarded but hopefully the result will give all ‘Loons’ supporters who have stayed so loyal to the club over what has been a difficult few months a great boost as we prepare to enter what will still be a very challenging New Year for the club.

Hopefully there will be further good news to bring to you prior to Tuesday afternoon’s visit of the ‘Lichties.’

A Happy and Prosperous New Year to all.
