Forfar Athletic continued their promising build up to next season with a comfortable victory over Preston Athletic. Not only was it pleasing to see the Loons create a myriad of good chances, but it was a joy to watch the quality of passing throughout the match.
The first 20 minutes saw the visitors dominate play, Keith Gibson’s over-head kick sailed over the bar, before twice in quick succession Charlie King released the impressive Danny Denholm down the left flank, his first effort cleared both the keeper and post, and his second strike was held tight by the keeper. But a goal was on the cards, and after 16 minutes Kevin Motion sent Denholm away again and his cross was well met by Gibson who struck the post with his shot, the danger wasn’t cleared and the ball was switched over to the left for CHRIS TEMPLEMAN to pick his spot with a strong header from 15 yards out.
Forfar continued to press the home team, King and McCulloch connected well with the big defender shooting over from 18 yards, then a good move between Omar Kadir and Keith Gibson saw the keeper make a great save to stop goal number two. After 22 minutes the home side equalised with their first attack of the match. A long ball caught out the Forfar defence, and as Soutar came out to clear the ball, SEAN MARTIN nipped in to take the ball around him and fire home.
Preston’s counter didn’t alter the flow of traffic though as the Loons continued to surge forward at every opportunity. Great link up moves were occurring all over the park, Templeman and King, King and Denholm, Kadir and Gibson etc – Forfar really were playing some attractive stuff. Twice the home custodian made good stops to save King and Denholm, then Templeman missed a simple chance before CHARLIE KING slid home number two from 10 yards out to restore Forfar’s lead just before the half time break.
Gavin Swankie replaced Keith Gibson at half time, but other than that, the line up remained the same at the start of the second half. The first quarter of the period was fairly even, but then the Loons stepped up a gear and dominated the rest of the proceedings. Denholm’s last bit of action was marauding down the left wing, beating three players before cutting the ball in for GAVIN SWANKIE to side foot home from 10 yards out. He then took a deserved rest along with Barry Sellars and Kevin Motion, with Duncan Reid, Michael Bolochoweckyj and Stuart Webster taking to the field.
Goals number 4 and 5 soon arrived. Swankie flicked on a short pass into the path of CHARLIE KING, and he lifted the ball over the on-rushing keeper. Minutes later SWANKIE collected a pass 20 yards out and drove home a fierce shot which gave the custodian no chance. King then missed from 10 yards out and Kadir fired past from close range. But it was the home side who bagged the final goal of an entertaining evening when KEVIN CAIRNIE fired behind Soutar following a cross from the left.
