Forfar Athletic 1 Dundee 4

Forfar were beaten 4-1 by neighbours Dundee on Tuesday evening as their preparations for the forthcoming season neared completion.

Prior to kick off, Loons boss Dick Campbell signed Euan McLean and Paul Lunan on one year contracts and both featured in Forfar’s starting line up.

The first chance of the match almost brought a goal, and it came Forfar’s way. A loose pass from defence was gathered by Forfar’s starting trialist, and he let fly with a shot which flashed past Rab Douglas and just wide of his left hand post.

The 13th minute proved lucky for Forfar when the woodwork stopped the visitors from opening the scoring – a searching Paul McHale pass found Higgins who timed his effort just right, only to see it rebound to safety.

For the remainder of the first half Dundee enjoyed the upper hand and took the lead in the 41st minute. Paton lifted a simple pass for Forsyth to run onto, and he fired home from 18 yards out. On the stroke of half time Dundee could have doubled their lead when McMenamin took the ball around Euan McLean before crossing over for Forsyth to head narrowly past the target.

Within minutes of the re-start the visitors had taken a 3-0 lead. Forsyth bagged his and Dundee’s 2nd after he won a loose ball on the left side of the Forfar penalty box, and fired low past McLean, and soon after the goal of the game was scored when McMenamin collected a short pass, took a touch, and hit home a cracking effort from 25 yards out.

To Forfar’s credit they kept plugging away, and created some decent chances in the final half hour. Once again the starting trialist came close after firing in a effort past Douglas. Paul Watson almost added to his pre-season tally with 2 efforts in close succession. Gibson then connected well with an inch perfect cross and his header was palmed over the bar to safety.

The Loons eventually bagged the goal their efforts deserved when Callum Smith collected a low pass with his back to goal, he turned well and shot home from 15 yards out.

But our neighbours had the final word on matters after Griffiths knocked home Dundee’s 4th in the 87th minute.

Not our best pre-season performance to date, but I’m sure the Boss will have everyone ready for Saturday’s trip to Stirling.
