5 Star Morton in Second Half Blitz

Tuesday, 09 August 2011 23:02

Forfar Athletic 0 Morton 5

Station Park hosted Forfar's fourth home match in a row with First Division Greenock Morton the visitors. A difficult match was on the cards for the Loons, and the second half action highlighted the difference in class between the two teams on the night.

Although the first 20 minutes of the tie was quiet, Morton had twice attempted to open up the home defence with O'Brien, MacDonald and Jackson looking dangerous. Forfar then started to liven up, and were soon looking dangerous themselves. Stevie Crawford and Ross Campbell linked up well down the right, before a low cross avoided the Morton defence and ended up at the feet of Kevin Byers, few could believe it when he stabbed the ball into the side netting with an open goal at his mercy. Minutes later a Martyn Fotheringham pass split the visiting back four with David Mowat reading the situation well, however so did Colin Stewart and he reached the ball first. The final chance of the half came Forfar's way when a Greg Ross throw in was chested into the path of Crawford by Chris Templeman, and the ex Scotland star first timed his effort narrowly past Stewart's right hand post.

The second half belonged to Morton, and as soon as they opened the scoring after 56 when O'BRIEN slotted home, it was one way traffic. Minutes later and WEATHERSON had added a second with a 20 yard free kick and MACDONALD had hit the third from a Di GIACOMO cross.

With fifteen minutes remaining Jamie Bishop felled Di Giacomo in the box and Northcroft had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. MACDONALD saw his spot kick well saved by Greg Paterson, however he was able to net the rebound. Shorlty afterwards and a simple pass from Weatherson released CAMPBELL and he made no mistake in ading number five.

A really disappointing second half display from the Loons allowed Morton an easy victory and the Boss confirmed he would not tolerate such a display.
