Loons Lottery

HOW time passes! It is more than five years since Forfar Athletic Football Club launched one of its most successful ever fund-raising
initiatives – the Loons Lottery.
The money-spinning venture has proved a real boon, not only for the Scottish second division outfit but for a whole host of other sporting
groups and local organisations.
Over the five year period, groups involved in the Lottery have benefited to the tune of a 'staggering' £280,000.
The venture is worth in the region of £35,000 a year to Forfar, while prize-money paid out to date, in the form of jackpot and consolation
awards, has broken through the six-figure barrier.
It was in March 1999 that the first Loons Lottery draw was made, and there have been regular weekly draws ever since, with the exception of
short breaks over the festive and summer holiday periods.
When the venture first got off the ground, local organisations were invited to get involved, retaining fifty percent of the proceeds from their
own ticket sales.
In effect, it meant that if a club could sell 100 tickets, they could boost their own coffers by £50.
And, if they could build up a regular clientele, it would be regular, easy money – for Forfar Athletic F.C. absorbs all the operating costs.
The Loons Lottery is co-ordinated by Forfar Athletic director Mike McEwan and his wife Helen, and numerous sporting and other clubs are
involved.
They include the two local junior clubs, Forfar West End and Forfar Albion, Strathmore Rugby Club, Strathmore Cricket Club, Canmore and Forfar
Bowling Clubs, Forfar Indoor Bowling Club, Lochside and Kirrie Boys' Clubs, Farmington Ladies, Forfar Ladies' Hockey Club and Forfar
Judo Club, to name but a few.
Mike and Helen would welcome other participating groups, and those interested should contact Mike or Helen McEwan on 01307 818765.
"We are always keen to welcome new organisations on board," explained Mike. "It is quite staggering what can be raised in a year
for very little effort.
"Organisation is the key, along with the ability to build up a regular customer base."
The draws are made every Monday evening at Station Park, and anyone interested in popping along just before 7 p.m. to see how it is done would
be most welcome.
The jackpot prize starts at £500 and rises to £3,000 until it is claimed by a lucky participant matching all six numbers drawn.
Each week the jackpot prize is not won five £20 consolation prize-winners are drawn at random from the participating tickets.
When the Loons Lottery first began club directors were envisaging a life-span of two to three years.
But, five years on, the Loons Lottery continues to flourish, helping to integrate the community and boost the coffers of a whole host of local
organisations.
Hopefully it will continue in that vein for years to come.
"If it's not broken, why fix it," comments Mike McEwan.
Forfar chairman David McGregor, adds:
"What an amazing fund raiser the Loons Lottery has been, not only for Forfar Athletic, but for many other organisations in the area over
a five year period and thankfully it continues to maintain its sales levels as the years roll along."
