FORFAR GREATS by DAVID POTTER
A must read by all fans, read on......
2009-06-26

A LIFE-LONG Forfar Athletic fan has put pen to paper to record the tales of ten Loons greats of the past in a book that has been published as part of the club's 125th anniversary celebrations.

The Station Park club has experienced many peaks and troughs since it was established away back in 1885 and, in his book, entitled "Forfar Greats", David Potter centres on ten players who played leading roles in the fortunes of Forfar Athletic through the years.

The book comes in ten chapters - with the focus on Davie McLean, Alec Troup, George Henderson, Frank Hill, Dave Kilgour, David Davidson, Doug Berrie, Archie Knox, Stewart Kennedy and Craig Brewster.

"Apologies are tendered to the likes of Geordie Langlands, "Jummer" Petrie, Allan Smart, Alex Brash, Ian McPhee and others, who may feel they deserve to be called "a Forfar Athletic great". "The emphasis has been on long ago players with the deliberate intention of keeping their memories alive.

"Indeed I was surprised by a few things in my research - how prolific a player for Rangers George Henderson was, that an ex-Forfar Athletic player called David Davidson won an English Cup medal, that three ex-Forfar players have scored goals in Scottish Cup finals and that Davie McLean was as well-loved for his cricket as his football.

Mr Potter, who has resided in Kirkcaldy since 1972, shares his passion for Forfar Athletic with his love for Celtic, but he also has a soft spot for Raith Rovers, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough.

He has written a few books on football, notably "Wee Troupie", about Alec Troup, who features in chapter two of "Forfar Greats."

The book, the first in a number of events planned by the club in the coming season to mark its 125th anniversary in 2010, was launched at Station Park on Friday.

The book is now retailing at £9.99 and is available for purchase at the Loons Direct club shop on match days during the course of the season, or from Richardson's and Hampton's the newsagents in Forfar.

And, there is a special deal - a £2 discount on the book cover price of £9.99 - available to those who purchase season tickets on or before July 6.

Supporters can also look forward to the chance of purchasing a replica kit based on the strips worn by the club some 125 years ago!

A specially designed home kit has been based on the kit of 1885, complete with a special commemorate badge, and it is set to launch in early July.
