Preview
The ‘Loons’ welcome Alan Maybury’s Stirling Albion side to the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park on Saturday as both sides return to William Hill League2 action after midweek outings in the KDM Trophy. It is certain to be a keenly contested ninety minutes with both sides entering the fray on the four point mark after their opening two fixtures.
Manager Jim Weir and his staff are certainly looking forward to the contest with the manager admitting that he is looking for nothing less than a similar performance to the previous home league fixture against Stranraer two weeks back. Jim is delighted with the way the players have performed to date this season but as ever accepts there is undoubted room for improvement. As a defender himself in his playing days he is particularly pleased that Tuesday night’s victory over the Hibernian youngsters brought with it a fourth consecutive clean sheet.
The manager knows however that tomorrow’s contest will be a big test for his new look side. Jim commented that Albion play to a system that the Athies team of last season found very difficult to break down and that is something that was worked on extensively during Thursday night’s training session. Jim also accepts that tomorrow’s game has the added spice of the welcome return of ‘Rusty.’ Russell McLean the ‘Loons’ leading marksman of last season with eleven goals, three of them a cup tie hat trick against the ‘Binos’, moved on to Forthbank in the summer. He will no doubt be relishing his return to Forfar where he is likely to be partnered up front by another former ‘Loon’ Ross Cunningham who had a spell on loan at Station Park from Hamilton Accies at the time back in the 2018/19 campaign.
Jim will have a full squad at his disposal and again the boss was pleased that so many of his players got valuable competitive game time under their belt in Tuesday night’s tie, a major plus in the manager’s opinion in regard to the revised format of the Challenge Cup competition. It has to be said that one player who took full advantage of his ninety minute appearance in midweek was young custodian Neil Stafford who made a handful of excellent saves over the piece, though others on the fringe of a first team call up for league match duty also impressed.
The management team, backroom staff and players are also all looking forward to getting back into Saturday action on home ‘soil’ where the support both in terms of numbers and volume in the competitive fixtures to date has been beyond expectation.
The man in the middle on Saturday is George Calder, a familiar face at Station park last term.
C’mon the ‘Loons’.
