Loons Hammer Neighbours As It All Comes Together At Last
[Saturday, 10 March 2012 20:32]

Forfar Athletic 4 Brechin City 1
Forfar's hopes of avoiding relegation were given a boast as their under strength side coasted to victory over their near neighbours. The Boss only had 14 fit players available to him, but the full team did Forfar proud in producing the best home display of the season.
The first 20 minutes of the match was poor, with neither side getting anywhere near close to opening the scoring. From then on in, apart from 10 minutes in the second half, it was one way traffic, with Forfar very much on top.
The first chance of the match came from a poor Brechin pass back on 22 minutes, Nicky Low read the situation well, and along with Nelson challenged for the 50/50 ball, the chance came to nothing though as Buist was on hand to clear the danger after the ball broke off Nelson's body. The Loons then took the lead following a great move between Ross and Motion, the ball was then released to Low who angled his cross into a crowded box and MARTYN FOTHERINGHAM flicked it home with a clever header. Six minutes later and Nicky Low was again involved when he crossed over from the opposite flank and Kevin Motion headed narrowly wide. Again Low found space on the wing and crossed into the danger area, this time it was Hilson who connected and his header was on target, but took a deflection behind for a corner. Forfar really were enjoying the upper hand and before long made it 2-0, NICKY LOW firing home a fierce left foot drive which Nelson was helpless to stop.
As the Loons continued to fire on all cylinders Dale Hilson beat two markers and swung over a deep cross, the visiting defence panicked in clearing the ball, and it found its way to the feet of Greg Ross, he looked up, steadied himself and powered in a great effort which flew inches wide. On the stroke of half time it was virtually over as a contest. Fotheringham played a short pass for KEVIN BYERS to run onto, he ran into the box before unleashing a great drive which sailed past the Brechin stopper.
The visitors did begin the second half well, and within a minute of the restart had pulled a goal back. Hodge floated in an inch perfect cross for BUIST to head past Paterson. Any thoughts of a Brechin fight back faded after about ten minutes as Forfar regained their superiority and started to open up the Brechin defence at ease. Nicky Low was having perhaps his best match in Forfar colours and Martyn Fotheringham was being a thorn in City's side. It was no surprise when goal number four arrived after 67 minutes. Another poor pass back was seized on by Low and as he waltzed into the box he was felled by Fusco., FOTHERINGHAM converted the spot kick past Nelson to seal a great Forfar victory.
