Of The Loons

The ‘Loons’ enter the revamped Challenge Cup now under the banner of the Irn Bru Cup at the second round stage, the draw for which will be made on Thursday of this week.
Gary Bollan’s side will be joined in the ‘hat’ by the fourteen first round winners along with Airdrieonians, Albion Rovers, Brechin City, Cowdenbeath, East Fife, Elgin City, Peterhead, Stenhousemuir and Stranraer who all also enter the competition at this stage.
The draw will again be regionalised and seeded which throws up the possibility of a midweek trip to Highland League outfits Brora Rangers or Turriff United who both came through first round jousts last night against the Under 20 sides of Ross County and St. Johnstone respectively.
The only Under 20 side certain to be in the north section is Aberdeen, but Hearts were placed in the north pot in the first round, so there is a possibility that the Tynecastle youngsters who defeated Stirling Albion last night are also potential opponents for the Athies.
Ties in the second round are due on Tuesday/Wednesday 16th/17th August.
