Many of the older generation of ‘Loons’ supporters especially those who accompanied the club on their never to be forgotten tours to Canada in 1980 and 1985 will be saddened to learn of the sudden death this week of Graham Smith over in Rockwood, Ontario.
Graham who was only 69 years of age was the son of our former Chairman Sam Smith and was the contact on the other side of the Atlantic that set up those two memorable trips and also the association at the time between the Athies and Guelph Oaks FC who were our host club on both occasions.
Graham who will be remembered in the ‘toonie’ as no mean player himself in his school days, in particular, was a respected veterinary surgeon over in Ontario having emigrated in the mid-seventies.
He kept up his association with the Oaks serving them first as a player, then coach and as a club official.
On his numerous trips back to the Forfar area, he was a regular visitor to Station Park to see his beloved ‘Loons’ in action.
Our sympathies at this time are with his wife Liz, sons Ross who had a few trials with Forfar Athletic in the Reserve League some years back before a stint in what is now the English National League with Ebbsfleet and Kerr as well as his sister Carol who lives in Coupar Angus and along with her family are of course season ticket holders at Station Park to this day.
