Battle for Runners Up Spot to ‘go to the wire.’
[Monday, 22 April 2019 12:05]
Following yesterday’s 2-2 draw at Gayfield between Arbroath and Raith Rovers, the ‘Loons’ remain in second position in the Ladbrokes league 1 with two games remaining.
This naturally means that the quest to finish in the coveted runners-up berth in the table at the end of the thirty-six game campaign remains firmly in our own hands.
Second place at the end of the day brings with a certain prestige, a slightly higher financial payment from the SPFL and very importantly a second leg home tie on a Saturday in the championship Play-Off Semi Final.
The Athies two remaining games will be no easy task however.
Montrose sitting now five points clear of East Fife in fourth place following an astonishing run of five wins from their last six outings are the visitors to Station Park this Saturday in a mouth watering clash, before a visit to Methil to face East Fife on May 4th is on the agenda for Jim Weir and his squad.
Stewart Petrie’s side will certainly be in the thick of the action as following their visit to the ‘toonie’ on Saturday first, they then entertain Raith at Links Park seven days later.
John McGlynn’s outfit host relegation threatened Brechin City at Starks Park this coming weekend.
So all to play for as they say!
Moving on the play-off semi finals, Forfar Athletic and Raith Rovers will definitely clash in one of them with only as mentioned above the permutation of who has the first tie on home ‘soil’ to be determined.
In the second semi final, either Montrose or East Fife will be at home in the first leg to anyone of amazingly, Falkirk, Partick Thistle, Alloa Athletic, Queen of the South or Morton.
The first leg ties are due in the midweek of 7th/8th May with the second legs to be played on May 11th.
