PREMIER SPORTS CUP
[Monday, 07 July 2025 18:38]

Following four pre-season outings, competitive football is now on the horizon for the ‘Loons’ with first on the menu, four ties in Group D of the Premier Sports Cup.
When the draw for the group stages was made back in late May, Athies fans could not have envisaged the tough section that was to be the outcome. Due to our lowly league position a fifth seeding was inevitable and first out of the hat came the top seed of the forty participating clubs at this stage St. Mirren, following their sixth place finish in the Premiership last term. That was followed by Ayr United third in the Championship last time out from pot two, the League 1 ‘top dogs’ Arbroath from pot three, Annan out of pot four the final opponents.
The four fixtures which commence with a trip to Galabank on Saturday first will prove a stiff test on paper for Jim Weir’s revamped squad but with eighteen players already on board and a couple more in the pipeline, the Club are certainly in a stronger position at this stage than in recent campaigns. The performances over the past couple weeks have been encouraging into the bargain, the turnout from the home support in anticipation of hopefully better days on the horizon certainly above what has been the normal in recent times. This is so appreciated by all concerned behind the scenes at the Alpha Projects Stadium @ Station Park.
As mentioned above the opening joust is against Annan Athletic who return to League 2 this campaign after two seasons in higher echelons. That fixture is due on Saturday first in Dumfriesshire, further information in regard to admission prices etc within the next 24 hours. Our other away fixture against Ayr United at Somerset Park, our first visit to that venue since 2016 is scheduled for Tuesday 22nd July, ticket details also to follow in due course.
We have two very attractive home games against St. Mirren and Arbroath to wet the appetite of the fans prior to league action commencing on August 2nd and the match day information for visit of the ‘Buddies’ is listed below. Detailed info for the local derby against the ‘Red Lichties’ on July 26th will follow in due course.
