Preview
The ‘Loons’ return to William Hill League2 action on Saturday with a visit from a Clyde side currently sitting in third place in the table, two points better off than their hosts with the first quarter of the league campaign completed.
The sides fought out a goalless draw at Hamilton in August, in fact goals have been hard to come by in clashes between the sides in recent times with only five goals scored in four contests last season. Victories in those quartet of matches also proved elusive for the Athies with two draws and two wins for the ‘Bully Wee’ the overall outcome.
Manager Jim Weir as ever is looking forward to the challenge in hand against the form team in the fourth tier at present. Their current record epitomised by the fact that Darren Young picked up the September Manager of the Month Award, Marley Redfern, the players prize.
Jim admits that the kind of run Clyde have been on in recent times, eight consecutive games undefeated in league and cup is the model that he is looking for at Station Park and he is convinced that the squad at his disposal is capable of reaching that target.
Again last week against an impressive Caley Thistle side, the ‘Loons’ players turned in an impressive and positive performance in the first period which was also pleasing to the eye, but again failed to capitalise in front of goal, before succumbing to a second half onslaught from the League1 leaders. The big disappointment for Jim and Gavin was again the manner in which we lost a couple of the goals in particular.
On the injury front Martin Rennie who pulled up immediately after scoring the opening counter last Saturday will require a late fitness test, but of course he is desperate to play against his former colleagues. Kieran Inglis is hopefully only a week or at worst two away from a return to ‘active service'.
The squad numbers are boosted by the return of the loan duo from Rangers Cormac Christie and Lyle Wark who hopefully will reap the benefit of a couple of training sessions with their new colleagues this week.
Saturday’s contest throws up one of those not totally unusual scenarios of two siblings potentially appearing on opposite sides of the playing divide, with Taylor Sutherland brother of Jake scorer of the our only goal at Elgin two weeks back currently in Clyde’s first team squad, also on a temporary transfer agreement from the ‘Pars'.
For both sides Saturday’s fixture will be one of only two league games in October month, Scottish Gas Scottish Cup ties in Forfar’s case away to Musselburgh Athletic, for Clyde a clash with Annan at home on the horizon for next weekend.
Sean Murdoch a familiar face in the past at Station Park is the man in the middle on Saturday, the first time this season he will have been in charge of a Forfar Athletic fixture.
C’mon the ‘Loons.’
