Edinburgh City v Forfar Athletic – Match Preview
[Friday, 27 February 2026 20:29]

The ‘Loons’ head to Edinburgh on Saturday in good heart having secured six points from their last two outings at home to Dumbarton and Annan Athletic.
They will take to the field of play at Meadowbank Stadium intent on completing what has turned out to be a truncated February trio of competitive fixtures undefeated against a home side who are going through a sticky period at present. Michael McIndoe’s side have lost three of their last four league games including 5-0 and 3-0 reverses away to Clyde and Elgin over the last week, that recent record now seeing them courtesy of course of a fifteen point penalty they incurred right at the start of the campaign sit two points adrift of Dumbarton at the wrong end of the William Hill League2 table.
Manager Jim Weir will no doubt have emphasised to his squad to ‘beware the wounded animal’ going into a clash at a stadium where historically the Athies record is not one to write home about. In fact our recent record against the ‘Citizens’ leaves a lot to be desired with three draws over the ninety minutes of normal play and four defeats the record over the past two seasons to date! Time for a change of fortune?
The ‘Loons’ management team again have a luxury that most certainly was not afforded them in the last couple of months of 2025 of going into Saturday’s contest with an almost full pool of players available.
It gives a new dimension to Jim and Gavin’s thought process going into the contest and a different headache as far as selection is concerned, but it is nevertheless a headache both are happy to contend with. Sadly skipper Stuart Morrison who returned to the match day squad last weekend will likely have to sit out the City fixture following the head injury he received after coming off the bench against Annan, but that apart there are no new injury or illness worries to report.
Whether Jim will decide to freshen up the side as he did last Saturday will only be revealed as ever come 2pm. on Saturday afternoon but there was no doubting the depth available to him from the bench in the Annan fixture.
The home side brought in around ten new faces in the January window including the return of Ouzy See as well as a trio on loan from Airidrie as they attempt what looked an almost impossible feat at the start of the campaign of retaining their league status despite the penalty points handicap they faced.
A third three point haul on the bounce would be fairly ‘foreign’ territory to the ‘Loons’ in recent times but hopefully more than a few Forfar fans will be in attendance to back their side and add to the at times ‘ghostly’ atmosphere that pervades at the revamped former Commonwealth Games venue.
The referee on Saturday is Alastair Grieve who was last in charge of a ‘Loons’ fixture at Annan in December.
